over-the-hill in dance years?

“I feel like I’m over-the-hill in dance years.”

I was 33 years old and saying this on stage to a panel of judges, after performing my solo dance piece in the New York’s Got Talent competition show.

Their response?

“Don’t ever say that again.” (Along with some other words that basically called out my own BS.)

Somewhere along the line of my classical ballet training, I had internalized the belief that quitting at 19 years old was throwing in the towel completely. That was it. I’d never be a “real dancer” again.

Despite the 6 years or so that I had been making my own dance videos, creating shows, leading other women in their own dance revival, speaking on a TEDx stage about my journey… despite all of that, I was STILL apologizing for my age. Using it as an excuse for not really being a dancer. Wanting some sort of validation to this belief.

I’m 35 now, and I’m doing more with dance in my life than I ever have.

I might not ever be in a Broadway show (which is one of the first questions I get when I tell people I’m a dancer: “Oh what shows are you in? Are you on Brooooooadway?!”) and that might disappoint some people, but maybe I’ll take my own show to Broadway someday. Maybe I won’t. That’s not the point.

The point now is my joy, my freedom, my embodiment, and the connection it brings me to my soul and to humanity. I don’t want to dance as a puppet in your play. I want to BE the play. I want to find the others out there who KNOW in their soul they are dancers, too. The ones who hear that whisper inside - even if they doubt it sometimes - the whisper that says Dance Matters. You Matter. Your Movement Matters.

Because it does.

If our planet is going to shift, we need more people living in their bodies, expressing pain and anger and joy and everything through their bodies. We need art. We need to medicate through dance. Or how else are we going to heal?

If this speaks to you, let’s talk and see how I could help facilitate your own dance process. My programs are like a rebirth canal into your soul through dance. A path and a community to guide you in getting back to YOU and getting your dance mojo back - in whatever way you desire. All ages welcomed ;)
